On this page you will find restaurants here in the village, in
the villages around and in Caernarfon and Bangor
First, places in
Llanberis itself, and the three best are the first:
- Easily the best rerstaurant in the area is Bwyta'r Copa (The Peak Restaurant), on the High Street clsoe to Plas Coch and within easy reach of the mountain railway and other attractions. We ourselves have been there several times, as have lots of our guests. The universal opinion is that the food is of a quality to match any you will find in the UK, with a relaxed atmosphere conducive to a thouroughly enjoyable evening. A typical main course costs between £12 and £16: a three-course dinner would be around £25 per head not including wine. Excellent value for an excellent evening. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 7pm until 9.30 pm. Phone 01286 872777 to book.
- Further up the High Street is the famous cafe of Pete's Eats -
the best cafe we have ever found. As well as the usual cafe
dishes such as fish and chips, mixed grills, lasagnes, and so
on, Pete's Eats offers a variety of vegetarian and whole-food
dishes. The cheese and spinach pie, made with filo pastry, is
an excellent example of the classic Greek dish and is our
personal favourite. Pete's is open all year, seven days a
week, (except Christmas day and possibly one or two others)
from 8.00am to 8.00pm.
- The 'Spice of Llanberis' Restaurant on the High Street at the North
end of the village (just past Pete's Eats), serves a range of
delicious Indian and Balti meals. We have been ourselves
several times during 2006, and so have many of our guests.
Everyone recommends it highly, though at busy times you may have to wait quite a while for a table. They are open later than most:
from 5.00pm until around 10.00pm or later. 01286 87198
- We have had good reports of the Gwynedd Hotel/Bar. You can eat formally in the restaurant, or have a meal in the bar with your drink. Friendly, hospitable and comfortable bar. We will expand this entry soon, when we have eaten there ourselves.
- We have a very good fish and chip shop in the village-
Seafresh Fish and Chips - on the High Street(take-away only). Open every day until around 10.00pm.
The other restaurants we can recommend are all beyond the
village and suitable for a (short) drive or at the end of a day
out. We know the following personally, and list them in order of distance rather than quality:
- First, for an pleasant meal in a traditional local pub, go to the Vaynol Arms in Nant Peris. This is not only
the best pub in the near locality, but does very good meals as
well. Particularly good for non-smokers is to eat in the
'Family Room' which is completely non-smoking.
- There is another Vaynol Arms in Pentir on the Bangor
Road (about a 10-minute drive, serving extremely good food in a beautiful
traditional pub. We have had lunch there and
can thoroughly recommend it. Booking strongly advised as they are often full. 01248

- About 2 miles out of the village along the Caernafon road,
on the left-hand side and just at the beginning of Llanrug,
the Glyntwrog does very good pub meals.
- A bit further still, on the same road, is the Sopna
Tandoori Restaurant. This is about three miles north of
Llanberis. This restaurant has gone from strength to strength, and in 2007 won the Wales national Curry House of the year award - the first time any restauratn outside Cardiff has taken the prize. Telephone: 01286 678133
Finally, a few good
restaurants in Caernarfon and Bangor:
There are many excellent places in Caernarfon. We can
personally recommend the following as places we have eaten in
and go back to:
- In Hole-in-the-Wall Street, just opposite the castle there
is the excellent Stones Bistro doing good modern British food
in a really comfortable atmosphere; on the same street is
Molly's - a local favourite well worth a visit (01286
673238)
- .
- For a really modern experience serving good modern food,
try Cofi Roc, on Y Maes (the main market square) 01286
673100
- .
- Also on Y Maes, there is the 'Honor' Restaurant, which has
a really excellent Chinese cuisine. (01286 678778).
In Bangor, we know of two good ones personally. they are both on
the upper end of the High Street (north of the Cathedral) .
- One is the Herbs Restaurant which started
out as a vegetarian restaurant and still have a mostly
vegetarian menu, though they do now include (mostly organic)
meat dishes as well. We use it as a quick lunchtime cafe on
Welsh-class days: Later in the day they do a similar menu
which you can see on their website. The food is very good
indeed and not expensive.
- The other is the 'Fat Cat', which is the original of
small local chain, with a cafe-bar atmosphere. We have been
there twice and really enjoyed ourselves. Again, good food but
not expensive.
Finally (for now), a couple on Ynys Mon (Anglesey).
- Just across the Menai Bridge from Bangor, there is the
Bridge Inn. This doubles as a pub and as an extremely good
restaurant - you can eat in the bar or in the conservatory
restaurant. A bit dearer than the above, but not very, and
very good food. Phone 01248 716888.
- Close to the bridge in Dale Street, Porthaethwy (Menai bridge) is the Ruby Restaurant, which we visited for the first time in August 2006. We were extremely impressed with the very high quality of the food, and can recommend it unreservedly. A two-course a la carte meal for two, including a bottle of wine, cost us £60, or you can eat more cheaply if you choose from the specials (a shorter selection from the main menu).
